Over the last few years Newman has seen the number of local newspapers grow from the original community based Newman News published by the Newman Mainstreet Project, to a second, with the addition of the Auzcorp backed Newman Mail.
Earlier this year, we saw one of the newspapers finish with the final edition of the Newman News coming out in February. Newman News was put together locally by a volunteer group from the Newman Mainstreet Project and relied on advertising, donations and sponsorship to pay for the publishing (which was done in Perth) and freight. Unfortunately due to the lack of sponsorship and volunteers, it simply became difficult to produce an uneconomical.
We have now become aware that the Newman Mail backed by Auzcorp will no longer be published in hard copy and will only be available as an online newspaper so from the luxury of having two newspapers Newman finds itself with none.
So our poll question to you the readers is 'Does Newman Need a Local Newspaper'?
