  An earthquake stirred many residents of Newman from their sleep on the morning of the 21st May. Geoscience Australia reported that the earthquake was centred 43km south west of the town. The tremor meastured at 4.5M was felt as far away as Mining Area 'C'  approximately 100km from the centre. The earthquake was fortunately in a remote area and no damage was reported in the town though Geoscience Australia estimated that damage could have occurred within an 8km radius of the centre. The depth of the earthquake was 9km. The earthquake which was classed as 'significant' occurred shortly after 4.00am with residents being woken by the noise and shaking. Just before 2.00am on the morning of the 29th January a severe thunderstorm struck Newman. Wind speeds of 104kph were recorded at the Newman airport together with 18mm of rain. The main casualties from the storm were backyard fences, shade sails and trees although some roofs were also damaged.

About five hundred people, mainly children, attended the  official opening of the new $1.8  million dollar 'Miners Promise' childrens recreational park  held on Sunday 22nd August. The park situated on Nimingarra Drive, is a partnership between BHPBilliton and the Shire of East Pilbara and was opened but  Mr Jim North, General Manager Newman Joint Venture Mines BHPB and East Pilbara Shire President  Mrs Lynne Craigie. "The Lulus Show" provided entertainment on the day along with a DJ, food and icecream stalls kept the large crowd well nourished. The new play equipment plus other amenities including barbeques have been given the big thumbs up, and were well tested during the day.

The park is named after the new Miners Promise Legacy Fund which has been set up to support families who have been affected by a death in the mining industry. More information on the fund can be found at www.minerspromise.org.au

Police are investigating the vandalism of windows, windscreens and mirrors of five Go West buses . The buses which were parked adjacent to the Go West yard at the corner of Laver and Welsh drive in the LIA were extensively damaged. The vandalism occurred in the early hours of the 29th January and police are seeking public assistance to track down the offenders.

Local Newman resident Barbara O'Driscoll was officially declared 'councillor elect' at the close of nominations at 4.00pm Tuesday 10th August. Returning officer Heather Logie made the declaration shortly after the close of the week long nomination period. There were no other nominations. The council vacancy occurred following the resignation of Councillor Kate Edwards who has represented the Lower Central Ward including Nullagine since being elected in 2007. Barbara will be sworn in at the next East Pilbara Council Meeting which will be held at the council chambers in Newman on Friday 27th August.
